Tucked between the Arbutus Greenway and Kitsilano’s leafy streets, City Farmer has been teaching Vancouverites to grow food in small urban spaces since 1978. Wandering among garden beds full of pollinator plants and sunflowers, it’s hard to picture the parking lot this once was. Co-founder Michael Levenston has been there from the start, alongside a rotating “brain trust” of volunteers, drawn back by time outside gardening, the instant community this place fosters, and the occasional fresh baking dropped off by neighbours.
